Mr Men and Little Miss Reading Challenge a Real Page Turner

Thomas Walling Primary’s Mr Men and Little Miss Reading Challenge is up and running – with young bookworms providing a boost to charity into the bargain.

They raised over £350 for the charity Children with Cancer UK. The Reading Challenge is a competition for Early Years and Key Stage 1, where children are rewarded for reading at home as often as possible.

Once a child has read ten times with an adult at home, they are moved onto the first stage of our Reading Challenge Map - Mr Happy!

From then on, every time they read ten times at home, they move onto the next Mr Men or Little Miss character. There are prizes along the way, culminating in a final prize when they achieve 70 reads and land on Little Miss Sunshine!

To launch the Reading Challenge, all children in school took part in a dressing up day, putting on costumes as Mr Men or Little Miss characters.

Assistant Headteacher Jemma Janes said: “As the charity Children with Cancer UK is currently fundraising with the Mr Men theme, staff and pupils thought this was a wonderful opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause.

“Children who dressed up brought in donations, and we have raised over £350 for Children with Cancer UK!”
